This past weekend I had the pleasure of being a part of someone’s amazing journey. I ran the Williams Route 66 marathon with a friend. She had just run a marathon two weeks ago where she had a 12 minute PR! Completing this race qualified her to join the Marathon Maniac Insane Asylum!! Tulsa is a tough course, so we had our work cut out for us. The rolling hills there are relentless. She just kept plugging away at them like a champion! Covering the distance of a marathon can be an emotional event. There’s almost always one point in every race I do that I feel this overwhelming emotion, the sense of accomplishment and joy, that it brings tears to my eyes. And it was around mile 23 that I looked at her and thought “Wow, look how strong she is. Look how far she has come!” She saw the tears well up in my eyes and gave me a big squeeze. It is this commitment and perseverance that I see in others that pushes and inspires me every day. It may have been a fast weekend driving to Tulsa and back in two days, but the memories of this road trip will be forever. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to share this time with her! Congratulations – and welcome to the asylum!
